The Syracuse Chiefs stopped the Lehigh Valley IronPigs by a score of 7-6 at NBT Bank Stadium, with the lion's share of the credit going to left fielder Mike McDermott. The 25-year-old had a career day, collecting 5 hits.
"Every batter wants to have a quality at-bat every time he steps up to the plate," McDermott said later. "He wants to hit the ball hard."
McDermott did just that in his 7 at-bats, much to the chagrin of the IronPigs.
"Not much that I can say," offered Lehigh Valley manager John Valentin. "He just hammered the heck out of us."
Mike McDermott doubled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, grounded out in the 5th, singled in the 7th, grounded out in the 9th, singled in the 10th and hit a solo-shot off Tony Smith in the 12th.
McDermott is hitting .208 for the season with 1 home run, 7 RBIs and 8 runs scored. He has 15 hits in 72 at-bats and played in 19 games.

Mendoza Blanks Toledo, 4-0

Indianapolis hurler Ernesto Mendoza put on quite a show, as he blitzed the Toledo Mud Hens with a 4-0 shutout. He baffled them with fastballs and changeups, allowing 3 hits with 5 strikeouts and 5 walks to pick up the win.
"I think every time we were looking for a fastball, he threw a changeup and every time we were looking for a changeup, he threw a fastball," Toledo manager Yusmeiro Petit told reporters after the game.
This season, Mendoza has fanned 48 in 60.1 innings and collected a 3-4 record with a 2.69 ERA.

Lehigh Valley to Lose Andriese for 10 Months

The season will end prematurely for Matt Andriese, the Lehigh Valley starting pitcher. He suffered a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament on 05/18/2026, an injury that is serious enough to knock him out of action for the rest of the year. Andriese was not available for comment.
Andriese has made 8 starts so far this year and put up a 1-1 won-lost record with a 2.83 ERA. In 41.1 innings he has allowed 38 hits, walked 8 and struck out 38.
