St. John Pitches Gem as Firebirds Beat Hickory, 4-0 Friday, August 22nd , 2025 Don St. John of the Rome Firebirds was on top of his game. The 24-year-old tantalized the Hickory Crawdads with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 4-0. "He had the changeup working," Hickory manager Joakim Soria said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower." The Rome hurler had 12 strikeouts, gave up 1 walk and surrendered 5 hits in his complete-game effort. St. John told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league." "If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.
