South Bend got a strong outing from Marcus Kerklaan as the Cubs defeated the Great Lakes Loons, 4-2, at Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium. South Bend, now 56-49, holds down second place in the Eastern Division.

South Bend catcher Danny Martin contributed a timely at-bat in the bottom of the seventh. With two down, he hit a changeup to center field for a run-scoring single. It was his 32nd hit of the season and put the Cubs ahead, 4-2.

"Marcus was throwing strikes, locating well," said South Bend manager Mike Brumley.
