South Bend Cubs starter Marcus Kerklaan turned in a top-notch performance against the Kane County Cougars at Philip B. Elfstrom Stadium. The result was a win for the Cubs, 6-2. With the win over Kane County, the Cubs improved to 51-46.

Greg Smith provided a timely hit. The South Bend pinch hitter delivered a 2-run triple in the top of the eighth inning to put the Cubs on top, 3-2. It was his only hit in the game, but he made it count.

"I just tried to make good contact," said Smith.
