South Bend Cubs starter Marcus Kerklaan found his groove in his team's 3-2 win over the Burlington Bees. Kerklaan, now 2-3, was the winner. In 8 innings, he gave up 6 hits, while striking out 7, walking 1, and allowing 2 runs. The victory gives South Bend a record of 49-44.

The Cubs got a big at-bat from right fielder Greg Smith. For the game, Smith was 1-3 with a double and a walk. In the bottom of the sixth, with a runner on 2nd, he stroked a run-scoring double. His 3rd double of the season gave South Bend a 3-2 lead.

"Tough loss," said Burlington manager Danny Valencia. "But that's how the cookie crumbles."
