Captains Continue Skid, Thanks to Porter, Cubs
The South Bend Cubs topped the Lake County Captains, 10-3, at Classic Park. South Bend shortstop Hugh Porter was a spark plug for the offense. He was 3 for 3 with a home run, 2 singles, and 2 walks, while scoring 2 times and driving in 3. Daryl Young was the winner. He's now 8-3. The loser was 23-year old right-handed pitcher José Jiménez. Lake County has now lost 5 in a row.

Manolo Ríos, who leads the MID in hits with 109, had a timely hit in the top of the fifth inning. With one out and runners on 2nd and 3rd, the South Bend left fielder hit a 2-run single. That put the Cubs in front, 4-3.

"There were things that we could've improved upon," said Cubs manager Mike Brumley, "but all in all, I'm satisfied with our performance."
