South Bend Bats Silenced by Collins
|
The South Bend Cubs were almost helpless in their 1-0 loss to the Lansing Lugnuts and hurler Steve Collins. Collins kept the Cubs confused all game, spinning a 4-hit shutout.
"Tip your hat to Collins," South Bend manager Mike Brumley said in a postgame interview. "He kept us off balance all night."
The 26-year-old right-hander had no walks and 8 strikeouts in a strong performance.
"It just happened to be one of those games where even when I made mistakes, they either fouled them off or someone would make a fine defensive play," Collins said. "It was just one of those games that things went my way."
In 11 starts this season, Collins has recorded 4 wins and absorbed 3 losses. He has pitched 71.1 innings, allowed 92 hits, struck out 69 and has a 4.79 ERA.
