The Cubs grabbed a win, 3-2, at Fifth Third Ballpark, overcoming a fine effort from West Michigan pitcher Sandy Lowe. Lowe went 6.1 innings and allowed 3 runs. Virgil Adams, now 1-0, picked up the win in relief. He allowed no runs on no hits in 2.2 innings. South Bend is 20-21 and West Michigan, with the loss, 29-12.

Manolo Ríos, who is tied for 6th in the MID with a .378 batting average, had a direct impact on the outcome. Ríos contributed a run-scoring single in the top of the fourth inning to put South Bend up, 3-2.

"Every loss hurts," said West Michigan manager James Russell. "But this was a tough one."
