In a low-scoring affair between the South Bend Cubs and the Peoria Chiefs, pitcher Artie Maddox was the difference between victory and defeat. The South Bend left-hander earned accolades for his stellar performance in the 3-2 Cubs win. Maddox, the winner, moves to 1-3. He threw 7.2 innings of 4-hit ball, while fanning 3 and giving up 1 walk. Randy Nelson picked up the save for South Bend, his 6th of the year.
Who knows how it would've ended, had it not been for Manolo Ríos? The 22-year old center fielder Ríos stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the ninth inning to put South Bend up, 3-0. For the game, he was 2 for 5, including 1 double and 1 single.
South Bend manager Mike Brumley called it "a pretty good win."
With the loss, Peoria is 18-10.
