With center fielder Sammy Simmons leading the charge, the Winston-Salem Dash defeated the Salem Red Sox, 7-1, at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium. Simmons, who is tied for 9th in the CAR in stolen bases with 7, went 2 for 3 with 2 singles and 2 walks, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 2. Ánibal Loronha earned the save for Winston-Salem, his 3rd of the year. The first-place Dash, at 79-61, now lead their division by 13 games.
Winston-Salem used a well-timed hit by Juan Fernández to capture the win. The second baseman socked a run-scoring double in the top of the sixth inning to put the Dash ahead, 2-1. Though it was his only hit in 4 at-bats, it was important.
Said losing manager Jose Nieves: "Give the Dash credit. They played a better game than we did."
