Carolina pitcher Dan Blair had a large part in his team subduing the Potomac Nationals, 5-2. The opposition could never mount much of a rally against the left-hander. Rudy Thomas earned the save, his 16th, for the Mudcats. Carolina is now 38-20, Potomac 26-33.

The Nationals had been locked in a 1-1 tie with the Mudcats going into the bottom of the fourth inning. That changed quickly when the 25-year old catcher Jesús Batista came to the plate. Batista hit a grand slam home run on a 3-1 fastball from Potomac hurler Jim Matthews. It was Batista's 3rd home run of the year.

"I liked his command," said Carolina manager John Cornely. "Dan was throwing strikes."
