The Myrtle Beach Pelicans beat the Carolina Mudcats, 4-1, at Grainger Stadium. Starting pitcher Willie Johnson was a big reason why. He held his opponent in check all game. The winning pitcher was Johnson, now 2-1. He tossed 5.1 innings of 1-hit ball, while walking 5 and fanning 4. Rinaldo Saro recorded the save for Myrtle Beach, his 7th of the season.
Who knows how it would've ended, had it not been for António Contreras? The 23-year old shortstop Contreras stroked a run-scoring double in the top of the seventh inning to put Myrtle Beach up, 2-0. For the game, he was 2 for 4, including 1 double and 1 single.
"It was just a matter of executing," said Myrtle Beach manager Jose Lobaton.
The Pelicans, now 13-18, know that wins in May count the same as wins in September.
