The inspired effort of Salem left fielder Ethan Lockyer was not enough to prevent a loss, 8-5, to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Lockyer was 2 for 4 with a home run and a walk. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2. Víctor Trujillo, the winning pitcher, is now 1-1. He went 5.1 innings, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits, while fanning 4 and walking 3. Augusto Balderas recorded his 5th save for Myrtle Beach.
In the bottom of the second, Myrtle Beach shortstop Kieran Willis had a productive at-bat. With the bases loaded and one out, Willis stroked a 2-run single to center. It made the score 3-0, Myrtle Beach. For the game, he went 1 for 3 with 2 walks, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once.
In comments to the Myrtle Beach Daily, Willis admitted that he doesn't always push himself. "But the results," he said, "speak for themselves."
With the loss, Salem sinks to 6-10.
