Quakes Pull Out Late Win, 5-4
San Jose got a valiant performance from pitcher Mike Thompson, but it wasn't enough to beat the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. Rancho Cucamonga won the game, 5-4. Thompson threw 8.0 innings of 5-hit ball for the losing team. The win was credited to 21-year old right-handed pitcher Jorge Castro in relief. His record improves to 1-1. Hal Powell took the loss. With the win, the Quakes have a record of 62-58.

The clutch at-bat came in the bottom of the ninth inning, when Rancho Cucamonga second baseman Steve Gillespie, facing Hal Powell, had a run-scoring sacrifice fly. It gave the Quakes the 5-4 win.

"Exhilarating win," said Gillespie.
