Giants Come Up Short at Modesto, 6-5
|
The Modesto Nuts defeated the San Jose Giants, 6-5, at John Thurman Field. Modesto center fielder Ken Boyd had a superb performance. He was 3 for 5 with 3 singles. Modesto reliever Mike Sanford picked up the win, upping his record to 2-1. Mike Thompson absorbed the loss. Kel Clark closed the door for Modesto, picking up his 31st save of the year.
The Nuts got a big hit from shortstop Jorge Román. In the bottom of the sixth, Román smacked a 2-run double off San Jose pitcher Mike Thompson. It was his 23rd double of the season. Suddenly, the Nuts were ahead, 6-5.
"Say want you want about this team, they play nine innings hard," said Modesto manager Doug Dascenzo.
The first-place Nuts have a one-game lead in their division.
