When he got to West Michigan, Thad Kennedy was just worrying about staying on the roster. Today, he was starring in the Round 1.

The 23-year-old rookie right-hander shut out the visiting Bowling Green Hot Rods, 2-0, in a remarkable performance at Fifth Third Ballpark. With the win, the Whitecaps took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-5 Round 1.

In his 90-pitch effort, Kennedy allowed no runs on 3 hits over 6.1 innings. He walked 1 and struck out 7.

"For the most part, I didn't think they knew what was coming," said Kennedy.

Game 3 is scheduled for Sunday at Bowling Green Ballpark in Bowling Green.
