RiverDogs Clip Hammers, 2-1, in R1 Contest
The Charleston RiverDogs and the Rome Hammers will take the Round 1 to a decisive 5th game. The RiverDogs got a dramatic walk-off victory in a must-win situation to beat the Hammers, 2-1, at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park and force the series into what will essentially be a one-game playoff. Charleston right-hander José Cruz had a sizable impact in the win. He threw 7.0 innings of 5-hit ball.

The RiverDogs were down to their last out in the bottom of the ninth inning, when 23-year old left fielder Tommy Brown landed a big blow. He turned a 1-0 changeup from Bob McCarty into a 2-run single. The walk-off single sent the Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park denizens into a frenzy and sent the RiverDogs home with a thrilling 2-1 win.

"I'm happy we won," said Cruz. "That's first and foremost. My goal is for the team to win the day I pitch, however it's done."

The next game is set to be played for Tuesday, September 15th , 2026 at State Mutual Stadium in Rome.
