Akron Sent Home with 3-2 Loss
|
The Richmond Flying Squirrels knocked off the Akron RubberDucks, 3-2, in Eastern League action at Canal Park. Richmond pitcher and Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, native Ernesto Varela had an outstanding performance. The winner was Varela. He threw 6.2 innings of 4-hit ball. The loser was Jon Kline. Pete Bryan was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 21 of 22 save opportunities.
Josh Ford had a direct impact on the outcome. Ford contributed a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning to put Richmond up, 3-2.
Akron manager Keith Johnson said he was "mildly disappointed" with the loss. "We had our opportunities, but we didn't take advantage of them," he said.
Today's win puts Richmond at 52-42, while Akron falls to 55-38.
