The home team gave the crowd at New Britain Stadium something to cheer about.

The Reading Fightin Phils got a superb performance from shortstop Tad Moore, but the New Britain Rock Cats still won the game, 5-4. Moore was 4 for 5 with a double and 3 singles. Jon Vinson finished the game for New Britain and earned his 8th save.

The Rock Cats beat the Fightin Phils in part due to timely hitting. Case in point: the two-out single Darrell Hawkins produced in the bottom of the eighth. Batting against Tony Smith, Hawkins gave his team the lead, 5-4, when he hit a run-scoring single.

In comments to the New Britain Today, Hawkins admitted he's been told to improve his work habits. "But," he said, "I know when to take it to another gear."

Reading drops to 13-12.
