Quakes Jolt Mavericks, 5-3, with Late Rally

Rancho Cucamonga Quakes starter Joe Groves was locked-in. He led his team to a win over the High Desert Mavericks, 5-3. The winner was Rancho Cucamonga reliever Walt West, now 6-9. The loser was José Pérez. Earning the save was Ken Smith. He's now cashed in 19 of 20 save opportunities.
Rancho Cucamonga took a 4-3 lead on Ron Evans's 24th double of the season. The 2-run double, which Evans hit in the bottom of the eighth, left High Desert pitcher José Pérez visibly frustrated.
"I thought we played some darn good baseball," said Quakes manager Matt Holliday.
After today's action, Rancho Cucamonga sits at 69-71; High Desert slips to 66-74.
