San Jose turned a fine outing from starter Mike Thompson into a victory over the Stockton Ports at San Jose Municipal Stadium. The final score was 3-1. Thompson yielded 1 run over 6 innings to notch the win. He scattered 7 hits, walked 2, and struck out 9. His record improves to 11-6. Hal Powell earned the save, his 37th in 43 tries.
Shortstop Ernie Palmer made an impact for San Jose, when he swatted a solo home run off Steve Russell in the bottom of the first. For the contest, Palmer went 1 for 4 with a home run.
Palmer told a San Jose Daily News reporter that he was "gratified" with the win.
The Giants bumped their record to 78-62 with this win.
