Eager fans turned out for a matchup between the Bakersfield Blaze and San Jose Giants.

The Bakersfield Blaze converted a terrific effort from starter Steve Woodard into a win over the San Jose Giants at San Jose Municipal Stadium. The Blaze won the game by a final score of 5-1. Woodard, now 6-0, was the winner. In 7 innings, he gave up 6 hits, while striking out 11, walking 2, and allowing 1 run.

Bakersfield used a clutch at-bat from Jim Baldwin to capture the win. The catcher hammered a grand slam home run in the top of the sixth inning to put the Blaze ahead, 5-1. It was his lone hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a humdinger.

"It was just a matter of executing," said Bakersfield manager Joe McEwing.
