The Greensboro Grasshoppers faced a tough opponent in Lexington pitcher Dave Irving, but did just enough to pull out the victory at Whitaker Bank Ballpark by a final score of 1-0. Irving went 6.2 innings and allowed 1 run. Picking up the save was Ken Patrick, his 21st. The first-place Grasshoppers, at 67-40, now lead their division by 3½ games.

Steve Hawkins came through with a big-time hit for Greensboro. The left fielder smacked a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning to give his team the lead, 1-0. It was his only hit, but it was clutch.

"Runs were at a premium," said Greensboro manager J.A. Happ.
