The Rome Firebirds beat the Augusta GreenJackets, 5-2, at Lake Olmstead Stadium. Rome second baseman Jerry Jones had an outstanding performance. He went 2-3 with a home run, a double, and a walk, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. Lou Riley was credited with the save, his 29th in 34 tries. The Firebirds lead the Southern Division by 5 games.

Jones had a game-changing home run in the top of the seventh. On a 1-0 fastball from Rob Schroeder, he banged a 3-run home run to left, giving the Firebirds a 5-2 lead. It was the 15th home run of the year for Jones.

Jones attributed the win to "concerted effort and focus."
