Though he had a stellar game, Jim Smith could not prevent his team, the West Virginia Power, from losing, 7-4, to the Greensboro Grasshoppers. Smith went 3 for 4 with a home run, a triple, and a walk, while scoring 3 runs. Merlin Mullins recorded the save. In save chances, he's now 6 for 6. At 63-39, the Grasshoppers have a slim two-game lead in the Northern Division.

It could have been a different outcome for Greensboro, had it not been for Jesús Peña, the 22-year old third baseman . Peña contributed a bases-clearing double in the top of the fifth inning to put Greensboro up, 7-1.

"We take it day by day here," said Peña, "and today was a good one for us."
