The Rome Firebirds got a rain-soaked win over the Lakewood BlueClaws.
The Rome Firebirds beat the Lakewood BlueClaws, 5-4, at State Mutual Stadium. Rome catcher Lou Britt had an outstanding performance. He went 2-4 with a home run and a triple, while scoring 2 and driving in 2. Rome reliever Liam Manfredy snagged the win, upping his record to 1-0. Manny Antúnez shouldered the loss. Lou Riley picked up his 11th save of the season.
Jorge Mendoza had a big 2-run double for the Firebirds in the bottom of the sixth inning. With Rome leading 3-2 and the bases loaded, he got a fastball from 22-year old left-handed pitcher Manny Antúnez and swatted a double to left-center. It was his 3rd double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Firebirds ahead, 5-2.
Rome manager Aaron Holbert called it "a good, solid win."
The loss makes Lakewood 23-16.
