June's Best AL Hurler is Matz Friday, July 1st , 2022 Los Angeles Angels hurler Steven Matz was rewarded today with the American League Pitcher of the Month honors. Matz, 31, realizes that pitching isn't all about how hard you can throw, it's about accuracy and about picking yourself up even when you've had a run of bad luck. "I'd like to say I don't give them anything to hit," said the Los Angeles starter, "but that's not true. Every pitcher gives up a long ball now and then. Usually there's at least one mistake in each at-bat, but you've got to battle through your mistakes and build some positive momentum. The rest will fall into place." Things did fall into place for Matz. In June he took the ball for 32 innings while notching 25 strikeouts, a 1.12 ERA and a 4-0 record. Matz has made 15 starts so far this year and put up a 8-2 won-lost record with a 2.23 ERA. In 84.2 innings he has allowed 62 hits, walked 25 and struck out 79. |
