Behind a solid performance from left fielder Kurt Newton, the Miami Marlins defeated the New York Mets, 4-1. Newton was 1-2 with a home run, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once for the Marlins. Ben Anderson got the win, improving to 2-1. He pitched 6 innings, giving up 8 hits and 1 run, while striking out 6 and walking 1. The loss puts New York at 4-6.

Newton had a timely hit for Miami in the top of the seventh. With Miami trailing 1-0, he turned a 3-1 fastball into a grand slam home run. It was his 1st home run of the season, making it 4-1, Miami.

"At the end of the day, it's always about your starting pitcher," said Miami skipper John Patterson.
