The Barons grabbed a win, 4-3, at Montgomery Riverwalk Stadium, overcoming a fine effort from Montgomery pitcher Sergio Díaz. Díaz went 6 innings and allowed 1 run. Jose A. Suarez closed the door for Birmingham, picking up his 21st save of the year. With the win, Birmingham has a record of 68-70. Montgomery falls to 59-79.
Birmingham used the timely hitting of Luis Vargas to seize the win. The right fielder stroked a 2-run single in the top of the seventh inning to put the Barons on top, 4-3. It was his only hit in 2 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"We were the better team today. Maybe that won't be the case next game, but we'll enjoy it for now," Vargas told the Birmingham Today.
