The Houston Astros and Chicago Cubs played a tight game with the hosts claiming a hard-fought win.

The Chicago Cubs got a superb performance from pitcher Keury Mella. Still, it wasn't enough to beat Houston. The Astros won the game, 3-2. Mella threw 6.1 innings of 4-hit ball. The winner was Houston reliever Elroy Smith, now 7-5. The loser was Chris McCarthy. Richard Rodriguez converted his 37th save in 42 tries.

Had Starlin Castro not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Castro hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 3-2, in favor of the Astros.

"We put some tough at-bats on some tough pitches," said Houston manager Pedro Lopez.

With the win, Houston upped its record to 81-81.
