St. Louis and Washington duked it out and the Cardinals came out victorious.

Ed Franklin pitched a gem to lead St. Louis to victory over the Washington Nationals, 4-1. Carlos A. Salazar earned his 20th save in 24 tries.

Juan Encarnación, who led the AL in triples with 8 in 2022, took Washington hurler Ty Buttrey deep in the bottom of the third. His 2-run home run put the Cardinals on top, 2-0. In all, Encarnación had 1 single in addition to the home run, while going 2 for 4.

"Ed kept his poise and got the job done," said St. Louis manager Aaron Thompson. "He was outstanding."

St. Louis is now 62-92, while Washington is 85-69.
