The New York Yankees got a sterling performance from pitcher Simon Mercedes, but the Boston Red Sox still prevailed, 4-3. Mercedes threw 7.1 innings of 4-hit ball. Boston reliever Ed Goodwin picked up the win, raising his record to 5-1. Angel Nesbitt was tagged with the loss. Boston raised its record to 89-65 with the win.

Boston took a 4-3 lead on Cristián Colón's 13th home run of the season. The 2-run home run came off New York pitcher Angel Nesbitt in the bottom of the eighth.

"I was a little disappointed," said New York manager Kirk Gibson. "We could've and should've scored more runs."
