The New York Yankees and Washington Nationals obliged fans hoping for an exciting game.

The New York Yankees beat the Washington Nationals, 9-8, in part because of shortstop Wyatt Mathisen. He was 1-2 with 3 walks, while scoring 2 times and driving in 2. New York reliever Dan Ibarra was the winner. His record is now 3-0. Jacob Lindgren took the loss.

The decisive blow was delivered by Israel Ávila in the bottom of the 11th when he hit a run-scoring double off 32-year old left-handed pitcher Jacob Lindgren to win the game for New York. The home crowd went nuts.

"This game was intense," Ávila said, postgame.

The second-place Nationals have lost 6 consecutive games.
