Royals Win Squeaker, 5-4, Over Cubs
|
The Kansas City Royals picked up a win at Wrigley Field, taking down the Chicago Cubs, 5-4, in 10 innings. On the mound for Kansas City was right-hander Kevin Martin. He played a central role in the triumph. The win was credited to 28-year old right-handed pitcher Carlos Long in relief. His record improves to 6-0. Orlando Romero took the loss. Ken Giles, who finished 2nd in the NL in saves with 41 in 2020, nailed down the save.
Who knows how it would've ended, had it not been for Dave García? The 25-year old right fielder García stroked a run-scoring double in the top of the tenth inning to put Kansas City up, 4-3. For the game, he was 2 for 4, including 1 double and 1 single.
"This is a resilient bunch," said Kansas City manager Jim Tracy.
Kansas City, now 52-48, holds down second place in the American League Central Division.
