Detroit Beats Oakland, 7-5
|
The Detroit Tigers topped the Oakland Athletics, 7-5, in American League action at Comerica Tigers Park. The game was highlighted by the performance of Detroit pitcher Shawn Cummings. Cummings, the winner, moves to 10-2. He threw 6.1 innings of 2-hit ball, while fanning 9 and giving up 2 walks. The American League Central Division-leading Tigers have a record of 47-33.
Johan Sala had a big 2-run home run for the Tigers in the bottom of the second inning. With Detroit leading 1-0 and a runner on 1st, he sized up a slider from Ty Blach, who is tied for 6th in the AL in quality starts with 10, and punished it. The result was his 5th home run of the season, which put the Tigers on top, 3-0.
"I tried to mix it up, keep them off balance," said Cummings.
