Wing-chiu Chin, who finished 3rd in the NL in strikeouts with 190 last year, was locked in. The right-hander led the San Diego Padres to a 6-4 win against the New York Mets at Petco Park. The winner was Chin. He threw 6.1 innings of 4-hit ball. The loser was Pat Whittier. Steve Huff earned the save for San Diego, his 10th.
In the bottom of the fourth, San Diego left fielder Jamal Underwood had a productive at-bat. With the bases loaded and one out, Underwood stroked a 2-run single to left-center. It made the score 4-1, San Diego. For the game, he was 1-4. He drove in 2 runs and scored once.
"I try to not think too much," said Underwood.
San Diego now owns a record of 29-35.
