The San Diego Padres could not turn a fine performance from pitcher Jesús Rodríguez into a win. Instead, the New York Mets prevailed, 4-3. Rodríguez threw 6.0 innings of 2-hit ball. The win went to Edgardo Castillo in relief, making him now 3-3. Domynguos Venegas took the loss for San Diego. Travis Ballew recorded the save, his 4th.
New York used the timely hitting of Shawn Deason to seize the win. The pinch hitter stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Mets on top, 4-3. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was a game-changer.
"We put together a nice win," Deason said.
With this game in the books, New York is 29-34, San Diego 28-34.
