In a low-scoring contest between the New York Mets and the Colorado Rockies, Pat Whittier, who is tied for 5th in the NL in quality starts with 7, proved to be the difference. The New York right-hander earned props for his performance in the 1-0 Mets win. Whittier yielded no runs over 6.2 innings to notch the win. He scattered 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 5. His record improves to 5-5. The Mets go to 20-36 with the win.
Lou McKenzie drove in one run for New York. The 27-year old shortstop had a key at-bat in the bottom of the sixth. With one out and a runner on 3rd, he broke a 0-0 tie with a run-scoring sacrifice fly off Steve Rhind. It was his 5th RBI of the season.
Whittier called the win the result of "everyone being in sync."
