Baltimore Defeated by Washington, 9-3
|
The Washington Nationals beat the Baltimore Orioles, 9-3. Washington pitcher and Hammonton, New Jersey, native Joey Gatto led the way. Gatto, the winner, moves to 5-2. He threw 7 innings of 3-hit ball, while fanning 5 and giving up no walks. The National League East Division-leading Nationals have a record of 28-17.
Jeremy Austin had a big bases-clearing double for the Nationals in the bottom of the fifth inning. With Washington leading 4-1 and the bases loaded, he got a splitter from Kyle Heckbert, who is tied for 4th in the AL in innings pitched with 59.2, and swatted a double to left-center. It was his 12th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Nationals ahead, 7-1.
"It's nice to deliver when your team's counting on you," said Austin.
