The Kingsport Mets weathered a fine game by Elizabethton center fielder Kevin Smith to upend the Twins, 3-2, at Hunter Wright Stadium. Smith was 3-5 with a home run and a triple, while scoring 2 runs. Steve Perkins, who is tied for 10th in the APP in holds with 2, was the winner in relief. His record is now 3-0. The losing pitcher was Ted Robinson. Kingsport now has a record of 30-16 with the win.

Jeff Porter was the walk-off hero for Kingsport. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Mets right fielder hit a dramatic run-scoring single to send the teams home.

"I'm just trying to make good contact," said Porter, "one at-bat at a time."
