Fans watched the Burlington Royals and the Bluefield Blue Jays fight to the finish.

Thom Mercer never let Bluefield get something going. The Burlington right-hander commanded his cutter in pitching the Royals to a 1-0 win. Mercer, the winner, moves to 2-0. He threw 6 innings of 2-hit ball, while fanning 8 and giving up 2 walks.

In the bottom of the fourth, Gil Osborne delivered a clutch hit. With two gone and a runner on 2nd, the Burlington third baseman hit a run-scoring single, putting the Royals in front, 1-0.

"Tough win," said Mercer. "We had to earn it."

The Royals, now 6-0, have played some good baseball in the early going.
