Powers Steals Spotlight, But Last Laugh Belongs to Bluefield
The Danville Firebirds and Bluefield Blue Jays riveted fans at Bowen Field.

The Bluefield Blue Jays overcame a good performance by Danville right fielder Joe Powers to knock off Danville, 9-8, at Bowen Field. Powers was 2 for 3 with a home run and 2 walks. He drove in 5 runs and scored once. Cliff Gilmore was the winner in relief. His record is now 2-0. The losing pitcher was Chris Hawkins.

Loren Allen had a big bases-clearing triple for the Blue Jays in the bottom of the fifth inning. With Bluefield trailing 7-6 and the bases loaded, he got a fastball from Eric Mitchell and swatted a triple to right-center. It was his 1st triple of the season, and more importantly, it put the Blue Jays ahead, 9-7.

"We'll hit the hot tub in good spirits tonight," said Allen.

The loss drops Danville to 3-4.
