The West Virginia Black Bears stopped the State College Spikes, 8-3, behind an impressive performance from Juan López. The 25-year old center fielder made life miserable for State College pitching. He was 4 for 5 with 2 doubles and 2 singles. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. The second-place Black Bears raised their record to 34-35.

West Virginia used a well-timed hit by Hank Marshall to capture the win. The shortstop socked a bases-clearing double in the top of the first inning to put the Black Bears ahead, 3-0. Though it was his only hit in 4 at-bats, it was important.

"It was our day today," Marshall told the West Virginia Today. "But we've got to keep our nose to the grindstone."
