Black Bears Earn 4-3 Win Versus Spikes
People outside the ballpark no doubt heard the roar of the crowd as the winning run crossed the plate.

The West Virginia Black Bears did just enough to sneak past the State College Spikes, 4-3, at Russell Diethrick Park. West Virginia pitcher Ed Hughes, in particular, had a standout performance. With the win, West Virginia raised its record to 17-13.

Coming to the plate with two out in the bottom of the 11th inning, West Virginia third baseman Johnny Osborn had a chance to be the hero. Facing State College pitcher Dan Eaton with the bases loaded, Osborn drew a walk, driving in 1 run.

"The key at this level is throwing strike one," said Hughes. "Successful pitchers do it."
