The West Virginia Black Bears knocked off the Connecticut Tigers, 5-4, at Senator Thomas J. Dodd Memorial Stadium. Ken Morris was a big reason West Virginia won. The right fielder was 3 for 4 with a double, 2 singles, and a walk, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 2. Ed Hughes, the winning pitcher, improved to 1-0. He pitched 9 innings, giving up 6 hits and 4 runs, while striking out 5 and walking 4. The loss puts Connecticut at 3-2.
The game was at a stalemate until pinch hitter Johnny Osborn came to bat in the top of the ninth. Facing Connecticut pitcher Jesús Flores, he hit a first pitch sinker for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting West Virginia on top, 5-4.
"I'm just happy to help the team win," Morris told the West Virginia Today.
