The Chicago Cubs could not turn a fine performance from right fielder Dave Hopper into a win. Instead, the San Diego Padres prevailed, 5-4. Hopper went 3 for 4 with a home run and 2 singles. He scored 2 runs. The Cubs fall to 12-18 and continue their sputtering start to the 2026 season.

The defining moment came in the bottom of the ninth for San Diego. That's when C.J. Cron hit a run-scoring double off 29-year old right-handed pitcher Orlando Romero to win the game. The home crowd went wild.

"This place was rockin'," Cron said.
